Acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles. When it comes to our skin, there are plenty of conditions to complain about—and even more products falsely claiming to cure these concerns. Luckily, we have plenty of medically proven treatments to help, but there is also things you can do on your own. Stylecaster recently put together some of the best, easy-to-do tips for clearer, brighter skin.
Ready to make 2017 your best skin year yet? Here are some top suggestions:
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
When in doubt, moisturize your skin—even if you are prone to oiliness. This tip should be a given, but it’s one that people still struggle with. Drying out oily skin can actually exacerbate the problem, triggering your skin to produce more oils to compensate for lack of moisture. Make sure you wash with gentle cleansers that contain natural ingredients to boost healthy oils in the skin.
Additionally, be sure to add sunscreen to your daily routine; many moisturizers include SPF if you prefer to avoid another product. Protecting your skin from harmful rays will keep you looking younger for longer.
Amp up your cleaning routine—and that’s not just for your face
It’s important to cleanse your face daily with a high quality product rich in antioxidants and, even better, containing BHAs (beta hydroxy acids).
But it’s not just your skin that will benefit from a cleaning; anything that comes in contact with it should also get a little TLC. Your pillowcases, phone, hands, and clothes can all harbor bacteria that clogs pores and can cause breakouts, inflammation, and other issues. So change your pillowcase often, wipe down your phone regularly, and avoid idly touching your face!
Skip the unnecessary steps
The internet is riddled with skincare gimmicks—but even if you realize it may just be too good to be true, it’s easy to fall victim when you’re desperately hoping for perfect, glowing skin. With that said, stop using harsh toners! Alcohol-based products will only strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving you with uneven skin that is more prone to having dry and oily patches.
In fact, it’s a good idea to avoid products with aggressive ingredients in general, such as sodium lauryl sulfate. Instead, choose professional-grade options that are formulated with proven ingredients.
To transform your skin, work with an expert
Everyone’s skin is different and requires different products and habits to flourish. Additionally, transforming your skin from bad to enviable typically takes intervention on multiple levels, including a diet that supports skin health and medical skin treatments that go beyond the surface. This is why working with a doctor-supervised skin care professional is one of the best ways to transform your skin. They can help you navigate your individual needs and make expert recommendations. Contact us today to schedule a skin evaluation and consultation with one of our Rancho Cucamonga skincare professionals.

Holiday party season has arrived! You’ve got your cute cocktail dress, some dazzling new heels, and gorgeous statement earrings all ready to go. Don’t forget about the other essential component of your knock ‘em dead holiday look—radiant, flawless skin!
Think it must be too late? Actually, there’s plenty you can do to revamp your winter skin care routine and get a glow on in time for the holidays. Check out these easy, effective ways to improve your skin:
1. Exfoliate to reveal brighter, smoother skin.
Clearing away dirt and dead skin cells is the first step to a brighter complexion, and the winter months are a great time to do it.
For light, daily exfoliation, look no further than your kitchen! Almonds and sugar are gentle abrasives to leave skin feeling smooth and looking bright. Just mix 1 cup white sugar, ½ cup brown sugar and ½ cup ground raw almonds (pulse in a food processor until fine) with 4 Tbsp. coconut or olive oil in a bowl, then store in a glass jar. Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin, taking care to avoid the eyes, then rinse with warm water.
Professional exfoliating treatments such as microdermabrasion prime skin to better absorb skin care products, helping them work more effectively, so you need less product to see the results you desire.
To reduce sun damage, fine lines or other skin imperfections, you’ll need professional help. In-office treatments such as microdermabrasion or an Ultrasonic Facial can slough away dull, dead skin and stimulate collagen production without heat or chemicals to leave skin smoother, firmer and more even in tone with no downtime. Bonus: professional skin resurfacing can help skincare products work more effectively, so you need less product to see the results you desire.
2. Eat across the rainbow.
A diet rich in fresh, colorful fruits and veggies will help you keep your waistline in check plus give your body a boost in age-fighting antioxidants. Some ideas: nosh on carrots before you head out to holiday parties, add mixed berries to your cereal or breakfast smoothie, toss a handful of chopped, leafy greens into pasta sauce, or swap your daily gingerbread latte for green tea.
3. Get a dewy glow and minimize fine lines with daily moisturizer.
One of the easiest ways to make your skin look young and healthy is to keep it hydrated. For a simple DIY treatment, we love an avocado-honey mask. Throw 3 Tbsp cream, ¼ of an avocado, and 1 Tbsp honey into a blender, puree, and then pat on your face, avoiding the eyes. Leave on for one hour, then rinse well.
To improve very dry skin or help slow visible aging, you’ll need more than a DIY mask. A quality moisturizer can also help minimize fine lines for softer, younger looking skin every day. We recommend Radiant C Moisturizers, which are safe for every skin type and contain antioxidants to replenish moisture, and lock in skin’s natural hydration for up 8 hours.
4. Get your beauty sleep (yes, it really works).
While one night waiting up for Santa won’t do much harm, skimping on sleep night after night can show in the form of dark circles, puffy eyes, and a dull complexion. Sleep is your body’s time to restore and repair cell damage, helping you feel energetic and your skin look bright and healthy, so prioritize bedtime during the holidays and year-round.
5. Brew a basil toner to calm acne prone skin.
Did you know that basil has anti-microbial properties that can help banish blemish-causing bacteria from your skin? If you have acne-prone skin, a simple basil tea may help keep pimples in check. Just pour 1 cup of boiling water over 3 Tbsp. dried basil leaves, let cool, and strain the liquid into a spray bottle. Spritz onto skin prior to cleansing as a fragrant, acne-fighting toner.
If you’re battling moderate to severe acne, an in-office treatment is your safest bet for effective results. A salicylic acid peel or clarifying acne facial can simultaneously exfoliate, cleanse pores, and reduce bacteria to calm inflammation and reduce outbreaks. Our pore-refining pads can also help keep breakouts under control.
6. Play some reindeer games (or just go to the gym most days).
Exercise boosts your mood, revs up energy levels, and reduces stress. It also improves circulation, helping your skin get all the age-fighting nutrients it needs to stay healthy and youthful. But don’t take our word for it; here’s the science behind it.
7. Don’t forget your lips! Exfoliate, moisturize and protect.
Cold temps, dry air, and wind can be hard on the sensitive skin of the lips. Incorporate lip care into your winter skin care routine for soft, kissable lips all season long. For a DIY lip scrub that also makes a great stocking stuffer, check out this Cinnamon Lip Scrub, which also includes a recipe for a homemade lip balm. Moisturize and protect with a high quality SPF lip balm; a knowledgeable skin care professional can help you choose a product that meets your needs.
If aging lips are an issue, try an injectable filler such as Restylane Silk or Volbella to banish vertical lip lines or plump your pout for 6 months or more.
How to get more flawless skin in a hurry: see a skin care pro.
To quickly and dramatically diminish age spots, fine lines and other imperfections, there’s no substitute for working with an experienced, licensed skin care professional. If you’re in the Inland Empire, come see our experienced Rancho Cucamonga skincare team for a consultation. We’ll help you develop a plan that includes both in-office treatments and at-home skin care products that are personalized to your skin type, budget, and goals.
Pimples, boils, blemishes, zits—there are plenty of words describing the annoying spots that affect most of us at one point or another. Would adolescence be the same without the dreaded outbreak? The next generation could be the first to find out…
A recent study took a look at what really causes acne and possible ways to combat this common condition.
The struggle is real
Even though 80 percent of those between 11-30 years old struggle with breakouts, hardly any of us know what causes pimples. We do know that almost everyone is covered in acne-causing bacteria most of the time. This bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, often gets trapped in our pores, resulting in inflammation and an overproduction of sebum—and ultimately leading to that monster of a pimple begging to be popped.
So why are some people more prone to acne than others? Are hair follicles to blame?
The study points to the possibility that hair follicles are the culprit behind your personal risk of breakouts. Thicker, more vulnerable follicles are a great environment for bacteria to congregate, which can mean more pimples. When the P. Acnes bacteria finds itself stuck in an area with little-to-no oxygen, it turns into fatty acids and inflames the skin.
This research also helps to explain why acne is most common among teenagers: hormonal fluctuations send production of oil and sebum into overdrive, giving bacteria more fuel to inflame hair follicles.
Options for treating acne
Though this study gives hope for finding more effective and permanent acne solutions, there is nothing currently on the market that can rid you of acne for good. That being said, there are medical-grade treatment options that can help clarify your skin and calm inflammation.
To achieve the best results, it’s important to find an experienced skincare professional you can trust. They will evaluate your unique needs and design a customized plan to tackle your acne issues. At our practice in Rancho Cucamonga, we offer a number of skin treatments that can help reduce acne including laser acne treatments like ELOS and professional skincare products, ultrasonic facials, and more. Our highly trained staff of MD-supervised physician assistants, nurses, and aestheticians can help you determine the best options for you during a skin evaluation and consultation.

Many of us have a love-hate relationship with our cell phones. They keep us connected, up to date, and entertained, but they can also contribute to eye and neck strain, not to mention keep us awake at night with the temptation to take one more peek at the latest updates from our friends. Now, new research has some wondering: are cell phones bad for your skin, too?
In addition to UV radiation from the sun, any type of light, from the bulbs in your office ceiling, to the glowing screen of your cell phone, may lead to hyperpigmentation.
Refinery 29 recently brought up this question, citing a study that indicates a link between visible light exposure and melasma—a common type of hyperpigmentation characterized by brownish patches on the skin. We’ve known for years that sun exposure can lead to melasma, but only recently have scientists looked into the effect that visible light may have on skin discoloration. The verdict? Researchers found that multiple exposures to visible light sources can induce more frequent and persistent bouts of hyperpigmentation in certain patients.
In other words, in addition to UV radiation from the sun, any type of light, from the bulbs in your office ceiling, to the glowing screen of your computer or cell phone, could lead to hyperpigmentation in those who are prone to the condition.
Relax—there’s no need to trash your devices and live in the dark.
While this study expands what lifestyle factors we may look at when identifying the causes of and determining a treatment for hyperpigmentation in any given patient, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are at greater risk for skin problems than you were before your cell phone became a necessity. Moreover, although extended exposure to visible light may impact your skin, good skincare habits can help make up for any harm that the small amount of light emitted by a cell phone may cause.
UV radiation is still the most clear and present danger to skin health, so using a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily is a must. An experienced skin care professional can help you find a high-quality product that will feel light on the skin and is appropriate for your skin type.
Need help treating existing skin pigmentation problems?
If you are already seeing melasma or pigmentation problems, in-office skin resurfacing treatments, such as chemical peels or microdermabrasion, can reduce hyperpigmentation by removing outer, damaged layers of skin to reveal healthier skin cells beneath. We’ve seen great results with both the Obagi Blue Peel and the Vi Peel for our Rancho Cucamonga skin care patients.
IPL photorejuvenation is another great option—it actually uses intense pulses of light for the good of your skin! The treatment absorbs excess pigment and promotes collagen production to restore a more balanced, even complexion, typically without downtime.
If you also want to fight hyperpigmentation at home, topical products containing tretinoin or hydroquinone can be a suitable option for melasma and hyperpigmentation. Always purchase medical skin care from a qualified, licensed physician—preferably a board certified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist. Unlike over-the-counter products, physician-only skincare typically contains greater concentrations of active ingredients and is clinically tested for safety and efficacy. Plus, by having a doctor help you choose the best products, you’ll be more likely to see improvements.
If you have questions about your treatment options for age-related skin damage, and you’re in the Rancho Cucamonga area, please give us a call (feel free to use your cell phone)! Dr. Haiavy, Dr. Ryan, and our highly experienced esthetic team will work with you to make sure your skin is receiving optimal protection and you are getting the most benefit from your skin care.
Magazine covers never cease to feature the latest “secrets” for getting great abs, but they all seem to say the same thing: strength train to build muscle, do cardio to burn fat, and eat a healthy, balanced diet. But what if you are already doing all of those things, yet still lack the six pack to show for it?
Blame genetics. Some of us are prone to store fat on our bellies, which will obscure even nicely toned abs. It’s a problem many of our patients who work hard to look good want to solve, so we’re thrilled to tell you about a lasting solution for getting an attractive six-pack, which we offer right here in Rancho Cucamonga: 4D body sculpting with VASER LipoSelection.
Here’s what you need to know abou this safe, innovative, and effective body contouring procedure.
What is 4D Body Contouring?
4D body contouring combines advanced technologies to reduce unwanted fat throughout the torso and reveal the muscle tone beneath. First, we use VASER LipoSelection to break down fat deposits and selectively remove them. This ultrasound-assisted liposuction technique is ideal for sculpting the abs because we can remove fat without damaging surrounding tissues. It is similar to our regular VASER Lipo treatment, but for 4D Body Contouring we use specialized cannulae (fat removal instruments) that can reduce fat around the ab muscles with greater precision, allowing us to better sculpt an attractive shape.
4D body contouring doesn’t “create” abs by sculpting your fat; rather, it accentuates or reveals your natural muscle tone by reducing the layer of fat covering your abs in a very specific fashion.
This step can be followed with fat injections to the breasts, buttocks, or other areas. Because VASER LipoSelection removes fat more cleanly compared to older liposuction techniques, it is ideal for purification and re-injection. Fat injections can help us emphasize the chiseled look by accentuating the body’s contours.
What makes 4D body contouring a better option for ab sculpting?
While traditional liposuction can reduce unwanted fat pockets and improve the body’s overall shape, it isn’t precise enough to accentuate muscle tone. 4D body contouring with VASER LipoSelection gives surgeons more precision and control when removing fat.
Of course, the skill of the surgeon performing 4D body contouring is key. This procedure requires specialized training—not every doctor who performs liposuction can do 4D contouring or get great results with it. Choose a cosmetic surgeon who has specific training and experience performing VASER LipoSelection.
What’s the difference between 4D sculpting and “abdominal etching”?
While both have similar goals, 4D sculpting and “abdominal etching” are slightly different in the way they approach fat removal. 4D uses VASER LipoSelection to reduce fat in a way that reveals your natural abdominal definition, while “abdominal etching” involves using liposuction along muscular lines to create the appearance of more defined abs. Thus the latter has a reputation for resulting in “fake” looking abs unless performed by a cosmetic surgeon with exceptional skill.
Simply put, 4D Body Contouring is a more advanced method, so you’ll want a surgeon who has invested in this newer technology and been trained in its use.
Am I a good candidate for 4D sculpting?
4D body contouring is a highly specialized procedure, and patients who have the following qualities will see the best results.
You are reasonably fit. As 4D contouring works to reveal a patient’s musculature, the procedure works best for patients who have good muscle tone. You don’t have to be an MMA champion, but it won’t help you get abs if you haven’t put any work into it first. A regular gym routine including core work and cardio should suffice.
You have good skin elasticity. The VASER 4D procedure sculpts your shape in detail, but your skin needs to contract well for your results to show optimally.
You are within 15 or so pounds of your ideal body weight. 4D body contouring is not a weight loss procedure and will not be effective on overweight patients.
You are a non-smoker. Nicotine use increases risk of complications during surgery and slows the healing process, which can negatively impact your results.
What kind of results can I expect?
4D body contouring will not make you significantly thinner. What it will do is help you look better, with more visible and refined muscle definition. Getting believable results—that is, results that don’t look like surgery—depends on having a skilled, highly experienced cosmetic surgeon perform your procedure. When you meet with potential surgeons, ask to see before and after photos of their own previous patients so you can see what each surgeon’s work looks like.
What is the recovery like?
Because VASER LipoSelection leaves nerve, skin and blood vessels largely undisturbed, patients typically enjoy a shorter recovery after 4D body contouring compared to traditional liposuction, with minimal bruising and swelling. Most patients are back to work within the first week and are ready to gradually resume exercise within three to four weeks.
You can help ensure a smooth recovery by wearing compression garments as instructed as well as heeding all pre- and post-op instructions your cosmetic surgeon gives you.
Are the results easy to maintain?
Results of 4D sculpting will last for years as long as you maintain a stable weight and continue with your healthy exercise and eating habits. If you gain weight or lose muscle tone, your sculpted appearance will diminish.
The great thing is that most patients find that this “quick fix” helps them stay committed to their long-term fitness goals. With the results of their hard work now more evident, they have a renewed motivation to stay fit and healthy.
Have more questions about 4D body contouring? Please contact us! Our experienced Rancho Cucamonga cosmetic surgeons are trained in VASER LipoSelection and have performed this advanced procedure for many years. We will be glad to help you understand what you might expect with 4D body contouring at a personal consultation.
For runners, few things are more frustrating than having an injury derail their training. Unfortunately, for those dealing with a bunion—a separation of the big toe joint that causes a bony protrusion along the inner ball of the foot—avoiding injury is often easier said than done.
Bunions can be painful on their own, but this foot deformity is also known to contribute to other running-related injuries—bunions alter how the foot strikes, causing a kinetic chain reaction that can stress bone, muscle and joints throughout the legs, hip and lower back.
Left untreated, a bunion can alter your mechanics, leading to a myriad of running-related injuries, from tendonitis to stress fractures. Surgery can permanently correct a bunion, helping you avoid these injuries.
Are you happy with your augmented breasts, but might like them to feel more natural, or refine your shape? Given how many advances have been made in implant technology and choices, switching from saline to silicone can actually be a pretty smart idea.
If you are on the fence about updating your breast augmentation, here are a few good reasons to go ahead and make the switch.
You can get the look you really want this time
Do you find yourself wishing you’d gone a little bigger the first time? So do a lot of women—in fact, upsizing is one of the most common reasons women seek breast implant revision. But did you know that you can enhance much more than your breast size by switching to silicone?
If you had breast augmentation before 2006, saline may have been your only option. Even after silicone came back on the scene, for several more years your choices were round, round, or round! Today’s breast implant options are so much better: you can customize your size, shape, projection, filling consistency, and even how much fullness you want on the top of the breast.
Your breasts will feel more like, well…breasts!
Whatever look you choose, silicone implants will feel more like natural breast tissue than saline implants. The cohesive silicone gel in implants like Natrelle Classic have a natural “give” to them that feels and behaves much more like real breast tissue compared to saline. Even the slightly thicker gel in highly cohesive implants provides a very natural feel to augmented breasts—for you and your partner.
Plus, you’re less likely to experience rippling or see or feel the implant edges beneath the breast skin if you have silicone implants instead of saline.
Silicone implants are safer than ever
If you originally chose saline because you were told it was the safer option, this will change your mind: numerous studies have shown that silicone implants are not linked to a higher risk for cancer or other disorders than saline implants are—the risk is actually about the same for those who don’t have implants at all!
In fact, silicone breast implants have been tested more exhaustively than nearly any medical device. Today’s “5th generation” silicone implants have strong, thick shell walls and cohesive silicone gel that will not leak into your body in the rare event of a rupture; these features provide an extra level of safety assurance on an already safe product.
The newer highly-cohesive shaped “gummy bear” implants have an even more impressive safety profile; they are shown to have a reduced risk for capsular contracture, and in many cases recovery time is shorter with shaped implants.
Implant exchange is typically a very simple, straightforward procedure
An experienced, qualified cosmetic surgeon can often perform breast implant exchange through the same incision sites used for your original breast augmentation, meaning no additional scars. The surgery takes about 1 hour and recovery is similar, or sometimes easier, than what you experienced the first time around.
Keep in mind, though, that every patient is a little bit different. If you need a breast lift or corrections made to your primary breast augmentation, your cosmetic surgeon may recommend a different surgical plan to achieve aesthetically pleasing, lasting results.
Need another reason to make the switch? How does saving $250 sound?
We’ve seen first-hand the boost in confidence that our Inland Cosmetic Surgery patients experience when they see—and feel—their updated look after switching from saline to silicone. We want you to feel the difference too, so we’re offering special savings for patients who come in for a saline-to-silicone switch.
Have your implant exchange surgery with Dr. Jacob Haiavy or Dr. Emma Ryan this summer, and you’ll save $250 off our regular fees. Your surgery must be completed before August 31, 2016 to take advantage of these savings so contact us today to begin the consultation process.
Ready to get started? Give us a call! We will be happy to answer any questions about breast augmentation at a personal consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic surgeons.

Your feet may be the last thing on your mind when you’re making your New Year’s resolutions for 2016, but they deserve a little extra TLC as well. So, keep your gym goals and promises of betterment on your list, but also consider making (and sticking to!) these foot resolutions.
A Little Support Goes a Long Way
One of the top reasons for foot problems is ill-fitting shoes. Just because a shoe is cute or complements your long legs does not mean that you should risk the health of your feet. Try these shoe-related resolutions on for size:
1. “I will not shove my feet into shoes that do not fit me.”
2. “I will only buy shoes that are sturdy, supportive, and comfortable.”
3. “I will not exercise or go hiking in a new pair of shoes that are not yet broken in.”
Our recommendation: If you can’t bear the thought of giving up your heels, stick with brands that meld style with comfort and support. We promise, they’re out there! You can also invest in good foot support pads from a company like Dr. Scholl’s.
Toe Maintenance is Key
When it comes to the feet, most people don’t think of the toes as one of the most supportive parts—but they are! Toes keep the rest of the body balanced and grounded, and your toes should absolutely be part of your foot maintenance routine.
4. “I will clip my toenails every week and make sure to take my time.”
5. “If I have a problem, I will not simply cover it up with toenail polish.”
Our recommendation: While pedicures can be a great way to stay on top of nail care, make sure you are visiting a reputable nail salon with top safety standards. At home, invest in quality pedicure tools and turn your toenail maintenance into a perfect self-pampering session.
Pamper Your Feet
Like your hands and other delicate parts of the body, it’s important to keep your feet clean and moisturized. Finding and maintaining the perfect balance between care and prevention is sure to help your feet live a long and healthy life. Here are some goals to keep your feet happy in 2016:
6. “I will moisturize my feet every day and make sure they are not dried out.”
7. “I will never go barefoot in public settings.”
8. “I will keep them clean and implement a foot soak into my weekly routine.”
9. “I will buy socks that naturally wick away excess moisture.”
10. “If I have foot pain, I will talk to a professional immediately.”
Our recommendation: Try to make foot care part of your normal daily routine. It takes only a month or so to form a habit, and your feet will thank you for it!
Meet with a Podiatrist
Look at your feet as your wheels on your car: without them, you cannot go anywhere! Many people don’t know how crucial it is to take care of your feet, but if you let them deteriorate, you’re likely to experience a lot of trouble. We’ll spare you the painful stories, but trust us, prevention is far more pleasant than fixing foot problems that have gotten out of hand.
Working with a professional is the best way to stay on top of the health of your feet, but most people have never met with a podiatrist! If you have any concerns involving the health of your feet and are in the Rancho Cucamonga area, do contact us today. Together, we can make sure your feet are getting everything they need to get you from point A to B safely and comfortably!
