How do BOTOX injections work?

BOTOX, or onabotulinum toxin A, is a neurotoxin, a neurotoxin that interrupts communication between your nerves and muscles. By temporarily blocking nerve impulses, BOTOX can target the underlying cause of crow’s feet and frown lines: the repeated movement and muscle contractions of your facial expressions.

When BOTOX is injected into these muscles, dynamic wrinkles on the brow and around the eyes are able to relax, leaving your skin looking smoother and younger. When administered correctly by an experienced provider, BOTOX will not “freeze” your face. You will still be able to make your normal facial expressions; your wrinkles will simply be less evident.

  • Reduction of Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Botox is most commonly used for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles, especially in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes (crow’s feet).
  • Preventive Anti-Aging: Regular use of Botox can slow the development of new wrinkles by limiting the facial movements that contribute to wrinkle formation.
  • Minimal Downtime: The procedure is quick, often called a “lunchtime procedure,” and requires no recovery time, allowing patients to return to daily activities immediately.
  • Non-Surgical: Botox provides a non-invasive alternative to surgical procedures for facial rejuvenation.
  • Temporary Effects: The effects of Botox are temporary, typically lasting 3-6 months, offering flexibility in case patients wish to adjust their treatment plan.
  • Highly Customizable: Botox treatments can be tailored to meet individual aesthetic goals, whether patients seek a subtle or more noticeable outcome.
  • Quick Results: The effects of Botox typically start to appear within a few days after the injection, with full results visible within one to two weeks.
  • Treatment of Medical Conditions: Beyond cosmetic applications, Botox is used to treat several medical conditions, including chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), muscle spasms, and certain eye disorders.
  • Good Safety Profile: Botox, like other botulinum toxin products, has a good safety profile when administered by a trained professional.
  • Baby Botox: A term used for administering smaller doses of Botox to achieve a more natural-looking result, or to prevent the formation of wrinkles in younger patients.
  • Botulinum Toxin: The active ingredient in Botox, a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, used in small doses for cosmetic and medical purposes.
  • Botox Cosmetic: A brand name for botulinum toxin injections used primarily for cosmetic purposes to reduce facial wrinkles.
  • Crow’s Feet: Fine lines and wrinkles around the outer corners of the eyes, commonly treated with Botox.
  • Dynamic Wrinkles: Wrinkles that appear due to the movement of facial muscles, such as when smiling or frowning, often treated effectively with Botox.
  • FDA Approval: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s certification that Botox is safe and effective for certain medical and cosmetic uses.
  • Glabellar Lines: Vertical lines between the eyebrows, also known as “frown lines,” frequently targeted by Botox treatments.
  • Injection Site: The specific area on the face where Botox is injected, typically in the muscles responsible for forming wrinkles.
  • Neuromodulator: A substance, like Botox, that alters nerve impulses, effectively used to relax facial muscles and reduce wrinkles.
  • Neurotoxins: Substances that affect the nervous system, including Botox; used in small, controlled doses to temporarily paralyze muscles and reduce wrinkles.
  • Non-Surgical: A procedure that doesn’t involve surgery, like Botox injections, offering a less invasive alternative for reducing facial wrinkles.
  • Preventive Botox: The use of Botox injections at a younger age to prevent the onset of wrinkles.
  • Recovery Time: The period after receiving Botox treatment, typically involving little to no downtime.
  • Static Wrinkles: Wrinkles that are visible even when the face is at rest, often resulting from the loss of collagen and skin elasticity, and not typically the primary target of Botox.
  • Units: A measure used to quantify the amount of product injected, with the required number varying based on treatment area and individual needs.

What conditions can BOTOX treat?

BOTOX Cosmetic can temporarily reduce or eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet around the outer edges of the eyes, and thick bands in the neck. It also has a number of medical benefits, such as treating excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes—and it’s the first FDA-approved injectable treatment for chronic migraines.

What is a BOTOX procedure like?

After we’ve determined that BOTOX is a great fit for you, you’ll be shown to one of our comfortable, private treatment rooms at Ahava Medspa at Inland Cosmetic Surgery. Using a very small needle, your provider will inject the BOTOX into your areas of concern.

Dr. Jacob Haiavy, Dr. Irene TowerDr. Emma Ryan and our staff of highly trained nurses and physician assistant all have an intimate understanding of facial anatomy and years of experience working with BOTOX—and they use this knowledge and experience to provide safe, consistent results.

Most patients report that BOTOX injections feel like a small pinch—there is some discomfort, but it isn’t intolerable. If you’re concerned about pain or have a low tolerance for discomfort, let us know! In some cases, we can apply a small amount of topical numbing cream before administering treatment.

After your BOTOX treatment

After your treatment, you can resume your normal activities, though you may experience a bit of redness, swelling, and sensitivity at the injection sites. You’ll start to notice your results within a day or two, and you’ll get to enjoy them for up to four months! To maintain a great look, we recommend maintenance treatments every three to six months.

How much does BOTOX cost in Rancho Cucamonga?

The final cost of BOTOX will vary depending on what areas you’re treating, how severe your concerns are, and how much product is needed to give you the best results.

BOTOX is priced per unit, a measurement of the potency of the botulinum toxin rather than the volume of it. The syringe of BOTOX you see at your cosmetic surgeon’s office contains a certain number of units diluted with saline solution—and a vial of BOTOX contains 100 units.

Typically, BOTOX ranges in price between $12 – $15 per unit. How many units you need for your treatment area will depend on your needs, but below are a few average ranges for some of the most common treatment areas:

  • Crow’s feet: Between 5 – 10 units per eye
  • Glabellar “11” lines: Typically 15 – 25 units
  • Horizontal forehead creases: Around 5 – 15 units

At our Rancho Cucamonga office, we often have promotions and specials that can significantly lower the cost of your BOTOX treatment. Visit our specials page for current offers.
