One of the first signs of aging are lines and wrinkles on the face. Although Botox and collagen
have been the first line treatment for the past ten years new products are becoming available and approved by the FDA.
In march of 2003 a new form of collagen CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast gained approval by the FDA. These are made of collagen
derived from human cells grown in a lab. They are better than Zyderm and Zyplast which are bovine derived collagen in
a sense that there is vitually no chance of reaction and no need for skin testing a month prior to treatment. The newer
collagen seems to last as long as the old collagen approximately three months and it also is mixed with some local anesthetic
which gives the patients some analgesia. More recently, Restylane was approved by the FDA as a dermal filler. Retylane is
made of hylauronic acid a substance naturally found in connective tissue. It is non animal based and therefore does not
require testing. It is also longer lasting than the collagen fillers and lasts approximately six months. Restylane can be
used to fill depressions, lines, scars as well enhance the lips like collagen. In our center at the Inland Cosmetic surgery
Medical Corporation the patients are encouraged to try temporary fillers in combination with Botox prior to using permanent
fillers or surgical coorection.
We have been very satisfied with Botox, cosmoderm and cosmoplast and are thrilled with a new filler that lasts longer.
At our center dermal fillers such as collagen are often used as part of the facial rejuvenation procedures offered to the
patients such as facelift, brow lift, laser and chemical resurfacing. Recently the FDA approved a new filler Restylane that
is made of Hyaluronic acid a natural substance found in connective tissue. Restyalne lasts six months and does not require
prior testing.
These fillers in combination with Botox can minimize lines, depressions and scars. In addition they can be used for
lip enhancement.
