PALOMAR FRACTIONAL LASER aka FRAXEL

What is it good for?

Diminishing Surgical Scar

Diminishing Acne Scars

Diminishing Stretch marks (Striae)

Skin Resurfacing to give a renewed glow

How do I feel after the treatment:

Area treated may feel hot for about 2 hours after the treatment. Can use cold packs or Aloe Vera immediately after the treatment.

You may feel 2-3 days of redness, pinkness, swelling, warmth or tightness.

Can use make-up the next day

“waffle” look or “slept on gauze” look for about 1 week

Avoid the sun for a few days. SPF 30 or higher

How many treatments do I need?

1 Treatment per month

3-5 treatments total

Continue to see results 6 months after the last treatment

How Does it Work?

FOR FINE LINES/WRINKLES AND RESURFACING:

The laser delivers light in an array of narrow, focused “microbeams” to create columns of coagulation within the skin. These columns initiate a natural healing process that forms new, healthy tissue. This results in improved skin appearance.

The Laser causes collagen reforming giving a renewed cellular appearance

FOR SCARS:

Laser scar treatment is appropriate for surgical scars and acne scars and works on any skin type.

Laser scar treatment uses “fractional” pulses of laser light to break down scar tissue and help generate healthy new tissue, light in color and more even in texture.

3-5 treatments will be needed.

FOR STRETCH MARKS:

Laser stretch mark treatment is a non-surgical procedure that uses pulses of fractional laser light to break down stretch marks triggering new tissue production at the site and improve the appearance of your skin.

In just a few simple treatments, redness can be reduced and stretch marks can be smoothed.

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM CO2 LASER?

CO2 uses the ablative method, which removes the epidermis layer of skin.

The 1540 uses non-ablative method: sending light pulses into the epidermis and dermis, while leaving the top layer of skin intact.

This allows for a quick recovery with the Fraxel Laser.

How Much do Treatments Cost?

Prices are per treatment. You can also save by buying a package as most will need a total of 3-6 treatments.

Regular price Special Feb. price Package of 3 (Feb. special)

Full face 600 450 1200

Chest 450 350 900

Hands 350 250 650

Small area of stretch marks starting at $250 (price determined at consultation)

Surgical Scars starting at $150 per session (price determined at consultation)

The February specials are only good for treatments done in February so book your consultation today at 909-987-0899.

For men with excess breast tissue, having male breast reduction corrects the problem, known as gynecomastia.

Treating gynecomastia also improves patients’ quality of life, according to a new study. Additionally, researchers found that patients reported a high degree of satisfaction with the procedure.

What is Gynecomastia?

Doctors believe the excess breast tissue is caused by hormonal problems. Men with gynecomastia can get a more masculine chest by having male breast reduction surgery.

During surgery, excess glandular tissue or fat is removed, either through liposuction or surgical tissue removal.

Results of Treating Gynecomastia

The study examined 126 patients who had undergone male breast reduction surgery in Siena or Pisa, Italy. The patients, whose average age was 28, were given questionnaires both before and one year after surgery. The survey asked patients about their motivations for treatment, degree of satisfaction with the procedure and quality of life.

All of the patients said their quality of life improved after the surgery, with an average satisfaction score of 8.2 out of 10.

The researchers found the results of surgery to be so positive that they suggested that patients with gynecomastia “undergo surgery always and as soon as possible.”

The surgery is relatively short — generally about one hour of operating time. The study reported a 17.72% complication rate. Potential complications include scarring, pigment changes, asymmetry, infection, bleeding and fluid loss or buildup.

Recovery from male breast reduction takes about one week, and exercise can usually be resumed about three weeks after surgery.

You should always use at least SPF 30 on your face everyday. Sunblock is essential to prevent sun damage and wrinkles. We have a new Inland Cosmetic Surgery brand SPF 32 sunblock cream with Zinc oxide and Octinoxate. Apply every morning and keep your beautiful skin protected from those harmful sun rays! In addition we have a Vitamin C Serum that is a powerful antioxidant. If applied to the skin prior to the sunblock, it will prevent oxidative damage and make your sunblock more effective by making it last longer.

A team of more than 30 doctors and other providers led by plastic surgeon Dr. Bohdan Pomahac at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston performed the first full face transplant in the U.S on a 25-year-old construction worker from Texas who was disfigured in a power line accident.

The man received a new nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves from an unidentified donor. The U.S. military paid for the operation, and it plans to use knowledge gained from the procedure to help soldiers with severe facial wounds.

Dr. Pomahac said the man will not resemble “either what he used to be or the donor,” but something in between. “The tissues are really molded on a new person.”

The operation, which took 15 hours, was not able to restore the man’s sight, and some nerves were so badly damaged from his injury that he will probably have only partial sensation on his left cheek and left forehead, the surgeon said.

About a dozen face transplants have been done worldwide, in the U.S., France, Spain and China. This was the third in the U.S.; the first two performed in this country were partial transplants. Previously we posted about the country’s first ever 80 percent face transplant performed at the Cleveland Clinic.

In past updates, we have discussed blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). First of all, it is important to recognize that brow and eyelid surgery are closely related, but there are significant differences. Brow lifting can lead to improvement in the appearance of the eyelid, while eyelid surgery does not significantly effect the appearance of the brow; although overzealous upper eyelid surgery can result in some brow droop. The most important question that patients ask is “when should brow elevation be carried out.” The answer, while obvious, is often overlooked. Brow surgery is indicated when the patient complains of the “Tired Look” even though they have had a restful night of sleep. They feel that a drooping brow detracts from his or her appearance. In many cases, a low brow can be very attractive, Many attractive models and actresses have a droopy brow which can impart a very sultry or sexy appearance. The actress, Brooke Shields is only one example.
Let’s assume for our discussion today, that both the patient and surgeon agree on a goal of brow elevation. What are the alternatives? The simplest is a procedure that lifts the brow through the placement of a suture that is attached to the scalp – a very simple operation that we tried several years ago with initial promising results but unfortunately failed in the long run. This supports our overall contention that simple suture techniques currently being widely promoted are not substitute for more definitive operations. Basically, mini-surgery leads to mini results.

Direct Brow Lift: Among the more definitive operations, there are several choices. The simplest is an operation called the direct brow lift. In this operation, an incision is made in the brow, after which skin is removed above and the brow is sutured to its elevated position. The operation works quite well except for one major problem. Unfortunately, the scar, even when hidden in the brow, is quite unpredictable and often becomes rather apparent. For this reason, the operation is rarely recommended. Exceptional cases would include those where there is a great deal of excess brow and where a scar would be more acceptable. An example would be and older patient where the brow droop is actually contributing to visual impairment

Mid Forehead Lift: In this operation, an incision is made in the forehead within a forehead crease. Again, skin excision is used to lift the forehead and brow. Once again, the limitation is the fact that the scar may prove overly visible. Its indications, while unusual, include patients (almost always men) with natural deep forehead lines which are likely to hide the scar, combined with a receding hairline which can make other techniques more difficult or impossible.

Endoscopic Forehead/Brow Lift: This has certainly become the most common form of brow and forehead lifting today. Like the traditional lift, it frees up the forehead, brow and scalp, allowing an upward rotation with strong fixation. The advantage over the traditional lift lies in the fact that very small incisions are used with dissection carried out largely under endoscopic visualization. All of the incisions are within the hairline and so there is virtually no visible scarring. In our practice, this operation is most commonly carried out in conjunction with traditional facelifting in patients seeking a combined upper, mid and lower lift. It does add some operating time, but in general, does not increase recovery time.

Coronal Forehead/Brow Lift: This was the original approach to lifting the forehead and brow. The surgery is carried out through a long incision – usually across the top of the head, but sometimes made right at the top of the hair line. The original technique involved lifting through excision of skin and tightening through the closure of the incision, although now, we no longer routinely remove tissue, but, rather, use fixation similar to the endoscopic technique. In rare cases, excision of forehead skin can be used to reduce an overly long forehead. the main advantage of the open coronal lift lies in the fact that the increase surgical exposure allows for additional contour of bone, or the use of implants for structural improvement.

Extended Subperiosteal Coronal Lift: This operation is actually an extension of the traditional coronal lift that allows us to also provide a strong lift to the mid face as well as the forehead and brow. It is one of the most powerful facelifts that we offer. Our experience has shown us that the results are far more lasting than other types of facelift procedures. This operation is primarily indicated in younger patients who are concerned about upper and mid face rejuvenation with less concern about the neck. It offers improvement down to the jowl but not into the neck. Of course, it can be combined with other procedures to rehabilitate the neck. Highlights of the procedure are: brow elevation, an elevation of the outer corner of the eye, a natural elevation of the cheekbone area and an elevation, albeit slight, of the corner of the mouth. As you can see, we have quite a few options when it comes to treating the brow. The actual choices you make will require a personal consultation, but this should at least give you some background information that will assist you in asking the right questions during your visit with a cosmetic surgeon.

Allergan, Inc. (NYSE: AGN) today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the expanded use of the LAP-BAND® System, Allergan’s gastric band, for adults with obesity who have failed more conservative weight reduction alternatives, such as diet and exercise and pharmacotherapy, and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40 and at least one obesity related comorbid condition.

Currently, approximately 37 million Americans have a BMI of 30-40 and at least one comorbid condition,1,2 underscoring obesity as a growing health epidemic in the United States and the need for additional effective treatment options. 3 Given its known correlation to life-threatening comorbid conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and even premature death, obesity is a disease that requires medical treatment. Medical research has found that, if left untreated, those individuals who are currently obese will likely remain obese.4 However, not all weight-loss treatments are effective over the long term – as a preponderance of data, published literature and scientific research have found that diet and exercise is unsuccessful in 80-85% of patients at one year.5,6

“As a surgeon, I see patients every day who have been obese for years and have tried several diet and exercise programs without success,” said Robert Michaelson, M.D., Ph.D., Northwest Surgical Weight Loss Surgery, Everett, Washington, and Clinical Trial Investigator. “These patients frequently feel judged by their weight, as obesity is often viewed as a lack of will power, which it is not.

Obesity is a disease, which requires medical treatment, but unfortunately diet and exercise alone do not work for everyone. The LAP-BAND® System meets an unmet clinical need, as it provides an effective treatment option, which is used in combination with diet and exercise, to enable sustained weight loss.”

A recent Good Morning America segment looked at how some teens are considering cosmetic surgery in order to stop teasing and bullying they endure because of their appearance.

One teen featured was high school senior Erica Morgo, who says she was bullied by her classmates in middle school because of her nose. “They would call me Pinocchio. And in school, in class, people would point it out. I felt helpless. I felt like a loser,” she said.

Her mother, Dana Manzella, allowed Erica to undergo rhinoplasty at age 15.

“I think that was definitely a good decision, because it brought her back — her self-esteem back up to be able to do activities that she did before, with comfort,” Manzella said.

Good Morning America said that nearly 90,000 teenagers had cosmetic surgery in 2007, and that doctors say the numbers are growing.

“I do see a fair amount of parents coming in with their child because of bullying and teasing and feelings of self-consciousness,” said cosmetic surgeon Dr. Michael Fiorillo. “My preference is, of course, to work out the issues first, the bullying, the teasing. But there are certain situations where people are mature enough. And surgery is a final resort.”

Nose jobs, breast reductions, breast augmentations and ear tucks are some of the more popular cosmetic surgeries for teenagers.

Michelle Martin, another teen featured in the segment, got a breast augmentation at age 19, after years of being teased for having a small chest.

She said while the recovery from surgery was painful, it was a small price to pay to make up for the scars left by years of teasing and feelings of inadequacy. She said she “absolutely” feels prettier.

“This was just something to make me feel better. To make me happy. To make me feel like a beautiful woman,” said Martin.

A recent study from George Washington University titled “A Heavy Burden: The Individual Costs of Being Overweight and Obese in the United States” found that it costs more to be overweight, and, more specifically, it costs more to be an overweight woman than an overweight man. Researchers found that the annual cost of being obese for a woman is $4,879 and $2,646 for a man; factors included sick days, extra gasoline and lost productivity. The reason it costs more for a woman is because thinner women usually earn more than their obese counterparts, but it’s not the case for men.

Another new report, released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, estimated that 70 percent of Americans are overweight and about a third are obese or at least 30 pounds overweight.

Bariatric surgery is one option for the obese. Patients can achieve a significant weight reduction and improvement in general health through a bariatric procedure, such as lap band. Weight loss surgery works by limiting the amount of food a person can consume.

One of these benefits is a decreased risk of gestational diabetes and cesarean section for obese women who have weight loss surgery before they get pregnant, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. Obese women who had weight loss surgery before conceiving were three times less likely to develop gestational diabetes.

The researchers compared rates of gestational diabetes among 346 obese women who had bariatric surgery before pregnancy and 354 obese women who had bariatric surgery after delivery.

The study found:

Rates of gestational diabetes were 8 percent for those who had the surgery before pregnancy compared with 27 percent for those who had the surgery after delivery

Rates of cesarean delivery were 28 percent for those who had the surgery before pregnancy compared with 43 percent for those who had the surgery after delivery

Most of the women who underwent weight loss surgery did not wait the recommended two years afterwards before delivering a baby
