The ColoreScience Pressed Mineral Pigment Compact, is available in three shades, designed for great coverage, and provides lasting sun protection.

Does it contain sunscreen? Not in the sense that their other products do; rather than an actual SPF, the pressed pigment compact is made up of minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

In addition, it has Vitamins A and E…which are antioxidants and give a renewed look to our skin. Plus, it’s naturally-scented with rose geranium, lavender, and sandalwood.

Now, a word to the wise: I’ve found that this product blends more smoothly, and appears far more attractive, if it’s applied to moisturized skin.

I hope you enjoy this new product we are carrying at Inland Cosmetic Surgery. Come in and try the tester and let me know how you like it! We are selling them for $60 each.

Are they different? Well, here is the answer for you. Both Retinol and Retin A are forms of Vitamin A. Vitamin A has been shown to have many anti-aging and anti-wrinkle properties. However, Retinol is not as strong as Retin A and is therefore commonly found in many over-the-counter- products. Retin A is stronger than Retinol and can therefore provide maximum anti-aging benefits, however it is only available by prescription.

We have wonderful prescription strength Retin A creams here at the office to help your skin look young and beautiful. Stop in and ask me about which product may be right for you and to see how we can help improve your skin tone, texture and minimize dark spots.

Patients who had Botox injections and used the Obagi Nu-Derm skin care system were both more satisfied with their results and found greater improvement in overall facial appearance compared to patients who had Botox treatments with placebo, according to clinical trial results.

Obagi Nu-Derm works by exfoliating and stimulating cell turnover, so skin behaves and looks younger.

Lead researcher Joel Schlessinger, MD, a dermatologist, said that often his patients have skin that doesn’t always look markedly improved with Botox or other injectables alone.

“Many practitioners are not aware of the potential benefits associated with incorporating this system with other non-invasive procedures in the practice,” he said. “This data clearly highlights the fact that by adding Condition & Enhance [Nu-Derm] to injectable patients’ treatment regimen, patients are addressing multiple aspects of aging skin for optimal results. The results prove that, even in patients who have previously had BOTOX, there is room for improvement.”

Patients saw results using Obagi Nu-Derm: 82 percent of study participants had peers notice a positive change in overall facial appearance, compared with 16 percent of study participants in the standard skin care group.

At the end of the 120-day trial, study participants also reported the following:

89 percent were either satisfied or extremely satisfied with their overall facial appearance, as compared to 12 percent of the standard skin care group.

93 percent were satisfied or extremely satisfied with the treatment regimen, as compared to 12 percent of the standard skin care group.

All of the participants using the Nu-Derm System wished to continue treatment after the study ended.

When looking at a group of 50 women, aged 30 to 50 who were being treated for glabellar lines, the study found a decrease in treatments did not yield a decrease in results. The study discovered that after a patient has undergone regular Botox treatments every four months for two years, the frequency can be lowered. The frequency of how often to get Botox may not dramatically effect its effectiveness.

In fact, the study found that patients who had completed the initial two-year treatment and then received Botox injections only every six months achieved similar results. This is when compared to those who continued receiving Botox treatments every three months.

Though Allergan, the maker of Botox, may still recommend continued treatment every three months, those looking for a cost-effective alternative could reduce the number of yearly treatments.

As an added benefit, the study found that the patients in the age group also experienced a reduction in the formation of wrinkles when Botox use was continued past two years.

In the United States, it seems that many drugs become hugely popular for uses that were never intended; such is the case with Allergan’s new eyelash enhancement drug, Latisse. The hot new eyelash enhancer was born out of a group of medications called topical prostaglandins, drugs frequently used to decrease intra-ocular pressure in glaucoma patients.

What was first labeled a ‘complication’ or side effect of using these topical agents was “hypertrichosis,” a condition characterized by darkening, thickening, and lengthening of the eyelashes.

Allergan offered the topical prostaglandin Lumigan in 2001, a drug that contained the active ingredient bimatoprost. Two important precursors to Latisse occurred after the FDA gave clearance for Lumigan.

Jan Marini Skin Research Inc had over $2 million worth of product seized by the Food and Drug Administration. The product, Age Intervention Eyelash, evidently contained bimatoprost, which was unapproved for cosmetic use at the time. Allergan later filed a patent infringement suit against Jan Marini and several other companies that had tried to market bimatoprost in their eyelash enhancing drugs.

Some doctors started prescribing Lumigan off-label to enhance eyelashes. Knowing the desirable side effects it could produce. But Lumigan wasn’t formulated for cosmetic use and many believed more research was needed to confirm the safety of topical prostaglandins for cosmetic use.

Clinical trials and further research is exactly what Alllergan Inc did. In one early study, 278 healthy adults with minimal to moderate eyelash prominence applied bimatoprost or a placebo to their lash line. The results were favorable; researchers observed that the average patient’s eyelashes were 25 percent longer, 106 percent fuller, and 18 percent darker, while only 3.6 percent experienced itchy eyes and redness, and only 2.9 percent experienced skin hyperpigmentation.

Latisse received FDA approval late last year for the treatment of ‘inadequate’ eyelashes. Allergan now owns the patent on use of bimatoprost for eyelash enhancement.
